St. Charles Celtics Form Team
When the St. Charles Celtics formed in 1981 it became the
first men's soccer club in the St. Charles area. Two driving forces behind
its establishment were Bob Heilman and Tim Dailey. These two soccer
enthusiasts originally committed to construct a quality high school program
for Bob's sons, Jim, Paul, and their friends. The resulting program
blossomed into the first competitive traveling soccer club based in
St.
Charles, Illinois.
The original team relied on local talent and former Europeans who competed
as youngsters. The Celtics drew its members from the old Geneva United Club,
St. Charles High School and returning collegiate talent. The organization
sought to test their skill and play at a competitive level. The Celtics have
decade old competitions against teams from Wheaton, Aurora, Naperville, and
Addison Trail to name a few.
The team played its first matches at the Kane County Government Center in
Geneva, Illinois, in the Western Soccer League. The following year, the team moved to
the old Kane County Fairgrounds on Randall and Route 38. Today, the Celtics
practice and compete at Campton Hills Park Soccer Complex.
David Kendall selected the team name at a pre-season meeting at the Heilman's house. The passion to support his heritage and desire to wear green
made Celtics an excellent choice. Following the first post-game party, the
name "CELTICS" remained in the center of the living room floor, spelled out
in empty beer cans. The Boston Celtics won the championship that year and
the St. Charles team gain an identity, along with the first team hangover.
As the Celtics approach their silver anniversary, the organization can
proudly look back to a respectable history. The team annually competes in
the over 30 Masters League, supports an Open Division and 30 and over sides
in the Northwest Suburban Soccer League, and contributes personnel to many
indoor facilities in the Chicagoland area. The team grew up with the booming
tri-city area and passionately maintains, contributes and cultivates the
soccer spirit of the community. The St. Charles Celtics “Growing Soccer
through Teamwork”.
