St. Charles Celtics 2006 Indoor League
Championship Winners

In the Bundesliga, a major upset took place when the Kings of Kingsland, former doormat of the league, went from worst to first and shocked the (formerly) undefeated Steel Balls to win the Bundesliga Championship. League scoring-leader, Jorge Ortiz scored the first goal for the Kings and then Mike Egizio knocked in the game-winner in the 2nd half. This, against the lowest “Goals Against” defense of either league! Captain Bob Pottle motivated his troops by reminding them of my comments about their “porous defense” and it seemed to work. The Kings allowed only 1 goal in that game against a very potent Steel Balls offense. Congratulations Kings of Kingsland!

Der Sting

In the Premiership championship, we had quite a thriller. The Gunners snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by giving up the tying goal with only 18 ticks left on the clock. In the first half, Der Sting’s Chuck Weddle scored a well-placed goal. Gunners’ forward, Brian Swindle put them ahead 2-1 with a tricky toe-poke bomb in the 2nd half. Then, with time running out, Dan Sather put the game into overtime with that 18 second zinger! 5 minutes of OT yielded no scores and the game went to PK’s. DJ Driscoll, Der Sting’s goalie, made some great stops (then and during the game; he allowed the fewest goals in the Premiership!) and Der Sting took the championship for the Premiership.
Congratulations to Der Sting!

Special thanks go to Colm Headley, Gunner player and owner of the Beehive in St. Charles, for filling Der Sting’s trophy with a victory beer for the winners.

Finally, we’d like to thank all of the players, captains, families of the players and SportsPlex for wonderful Fall and Winter sessions.

Hope you all have a great Spring and Summer!  Maybe we’ll see you in our (relaxed) Spring Indoor season, which starts Tuesday, April, 11th. Outdoor teams are forming now. Contact your captain for additional information.

Take care and see you all soon!
