Celtics Teams Reach Semi-Finals at Presidents Cup in
Madison, Wisconsin.
St. Charles Celtics teams participated in the 12th Annual
President’s Cup Indoor Soccer Tournament. 64 teams, with half from outside
of the city of Madison, WI, played in the two-day tournament on February
19th and 20th, 2005.
Celtics teams played in the Men’s Over- 30 and Men’s Over-35 divisions. The
Over-30 side won both matches on Saturday against Bares United (2-0) and
Madison United (10-0). On Sunday, with a victory against Pumas (3-0) the
team was in the Semi-Final. The hard fought match against last year’s
champions, Forest City, (4-5) ended in defeat. Celtics Tournament MVP,
Darren Llewellyn, played with a chip and a fracture of the elbow in both
Over-30 and Over-35 matches. No displacement, so surgery and a cast were not
in order. He said, “It is sore but doesn't feel fractured. I would do it
again the same way and play on Sunday with the hurt elbow except that I want
to make the finals next time!” The Over 30 team can take pride in being the
only team in the whole competition not to concede a goal in the group games.
The Over-35 finished on Saturday with a win against Weezers (5-3) and a tie
against defending champions Hooligans (2-2). On Sunday, the Celtics bounced
back with a win against Lowen (5-3). Qualifying for the semi-final against
Forest City proved to be a bit much for the weary Celtics. A 5-2 defeat
ended the Celtics competition.
Participants for the Over-30 team where: Mike Aleksic, Randy Kula, Scott
Sheen, Dave Rout, Darren Llewellyn, Dominick Muzi, Tom Waters, Gustavo Paiva,
Vince Losacco, Terry Doud, and Brian Babka.
Participants for the Over-35 team where: Gary Cole, Randy Kula, Scott Sheen,
Dave Rout, Darren Llewellyn, Claudio Frigo, Sam Mele (I’m pretty sure I told
you guys, I pulled my hamstring), John Flynn, George Held, Ken Fanale, Tom
Miller, Mike Aleksic, and Vince Nemenski.
A special thanks to the tournament organizers, Dave Rout and John Flynn.
Dave was quoted as saying, “Thanks for participating. I had an enjoyable
time both on and off the field. I was pleasantly surprised each team reached
the semi's. I think we all feel the Over- 30 team should have reached the
final especially after not conceding a goal in the group games (thanks to
Darren). Please spread the word for next year; perhaps we can take more
teams next time. This was my third year and the best yet especially since I
was able to get to know some less familiar names and faces”.
Bring on outdoor, let's have more fun and be even more competitive!
A great time was had by all, excellent soccer and some great fun (too much
for some) on Saturday night. Judging by the emails flying around, we will be
back next year.
